Redrawing and retracing services

We redraw, retrace and relabel many types of images, scans, and diagrams, improving, editing and re-rendering in a high‑resolution vector format. We can also change the line thickness, colour and text. Also different types of publications like academic medical journals, may have specific artwork production and setup guidelines, that we can adhere to.

City guidebook map.

Services

Redrawing + Typographic design + Corrections.

About the client

They produce comprehensive local history books on a variety of subjects, publishing more than 600 books per year.

Client’s needs

This U.K. history book publisher needed a map for their city guidebook, highlighting main locations refered to in the book.

Before our redrawing.

Original greyscale map supplied

After our redrawing.

Redrawn colour map showing roads and main place markers with a key

Outline of what we did

They supplied a rough scan with the author’s markings on top. The publisher needed this simple looking, but tricky to actually do map for their book. We managed all the issues and problems, even amending corrections from the editors. The map had to utilise the small space available in the book and still be legible. We used layers in the illustration file, so we could easily name, edit and manage the various parts. They needed a high‑resolution editable file, so we provided the original Adobe Illustrator file (.ai).

3 main improvements

  • Better and more relevant use of colour to communicate the map’s parts and values.
  • Used layers in the electronic files, so the map can be easily edited, updated and exported-out in the future.
  • Managed corrections from the publisher’s editors in a quick and precise manner.
Guided by the book

Project title

Graphs and diagrams.

Services

Redrawing + Typographic design + Corrections.

About the client

An award-winning, multi-platform information service for the medical community, providing premium content to improve medical practice.

Client’s needs

They needed many diagrams and graphs of different types for this book to be redrawn and typeset, fitting their inside book design style.

Before our redrawing.

Original data supplied

After our redrawing.

Redrawn smoking cessation graph to fit the book width and formatted in the graph house style

Outline of what we did

We worked with the client creating precise accurate diagrams and graphs, and also amended corrections from the editors. The client needed graphs reordering (largest percentage values starting at the top, to smallest percentage values at the bottom), that was not how the graphs were originally supplied, and was no problem to do.

3 main improvements

  • Reordered data in an easier-to-understand and more logical way for people.
  • Improved alignment and used consistent spacing for boxes and text.
  • Increased the book’s perceived value and design quality.
Encouraged surgical precision

Project title

Anglesey map design.

Services

Redrawing + Typographic design + Technical illustration + Corrections.

About the client

They produce comprehensive local history books on a variety of subjects, publishing more than 600 books per year.

Client’s needs

The map was to be used at the beginning of their book on Anglesey in Wales, to instruct readers as to where the locations were referred to, throughout the book. The client needed a map made‑up and redrawn from scans and sketches.

Before our redrawing.

Author scans and locations for redrawing

After our redrawing.

Redrawn and edited map for the book of Anglesey

Outline of what we did

The author provided a rough scan of the map, we also consulted various other maps because the scans were low-quality and lacked detail. We redrew the map in a fitting style in-keeping with the inside book design. The map was especially designed for the small space available, maximising legibility and clarity, whilst containing a lot of building locations and information. We had to utilise zoomed‑in sections because of the large amount of information in the small space available, to improve the map reading experience.

3 main improvements

  • Clarified and improved the author’s sketches, producing a map that the whole book revolves around.
  • Managed corrections from the publisher’s editors in a quick and precise manner.
  • Designed the map to go within the small constraint of the page size.

Medical anatomy and analysis redrawing.

Services

Redrawing + Technical illustration.

About the client

Author of 6 textbooks on medicine.

Client’s needs

Only low-quality images of these illustrations were available. We were asked to completely redraw, edit and improve the illustrations.

Before our redrawing.

Skin and hair medical illustration for a textbook. Shows the original scan provided by the author

After our redrawing.

Skin and hair medical illustration for a textbook. Shows the redrawn/retraced illustration in a high-resolution vector format much improved and better technically

Outline of what we did

We redrew the scans, improving on colour quality and rendering when printed, and were careful to not lose any of the details in the scanned images. We sent the author the editable original Adobe Illustrator files (.ai’s) as standard, that were setup for CMYK printing, and colour managed.

3 main improvements

  • Increased medical illustration quality by using best practice expert knowledge and technical experience.
  • Managed corrections from the publisher’s editors in a quick and precise manner.
  • Gave the author good quality illustrations to explain their written content, also increasing readers motivation.
Gave them a facelift

3 results of redrawing and retracing by us

1 More professional, legible, better branded, and pixelated‑free illustrations.

2 Illustrations that can be edited and updated easily in the future, and exported-out in a range of file formats.

3 Ability to zoom-in or zoom-out, to virtually any size with no loss of quality.
