Typesetting services

We can handle general trade books, to the most complex of 1000+ page academic textbooks. We format text and content ensuring it is accurate and consistent, using industry standard software from Adobe, Quark and Office. We learn quickly about how a design or document is put together. Our expert typographic knowledge, understanding of editorial style and eye for detail is also a natural benefit. Our turnaround times are prompt, or they are set by you. We typeset books and journals on a regular basis for publishers.

Details

3 column layout. Pages: 215. Page size: width 170mm × height 240mm. Paper: unknown, 100g/m².

How did we fix a few of the client’s problems?

  • The client needed a wide range of information (text, foreign text, and photos) typesetting exactly the same as their previous world cinema directories, in a variating 3 column layout.
  • We amended a large amount of corrections from the editors, around 240 in total.
  • The text also included many Turkish specific diacritic marks, some were not available in the typeface used, and had to be put in manually using the available standalone diacritic marks and kerning.

Details

2 column layout based on 9 × 9 grid. Pages: 184. Page size: A4: width 210mm × height 297mm. Paper: Croxley Heritage Wove, ivory, 120g/m², 75% recycled.

How did we fix a few of the client’s problems?

  • This book required demanding and accurate typesetting. The content needed support for: Greek characters, superiors/subscripts, different numerical alignment styles, equations, mathematical and scientific symbols. We choose and recommended 2 typeface families that would get the job done.
  • The book featured many tables, which we setup an appealing table style for, really enhancing them into an enjoyable feature of the book (rather than typically under-designed, dull and boring).
  • We decided to use no hyphenation on the ranged left text setting to avoid splitting and hyphenating complex lengthy medical terminology (which could lead to further confusion).

Book type

Input

Typesetting, corrections.

Details

1 column layout. Pages: 300. Page size: Royal: width 156mm × height 234mm. Paper: unknown, 80g/m².

How did we fix a few of the client’s problems?

  • The standard body text typeface the publisher instructed us to use, did not have properly drawn superscript characters. Thankfully, there was a semi-bold weight of the typeface available, which we used just for superscripts, so they render at the same boldness as the main body text weight and do not print too light.
  • The book needed accurate typesetting with 100s of footnotes. We were careful to double check all footnotes, to make sure they were on the same page as the footnote reference in the main body text.
  • We expertly typeset this tricky and text dense book, ensuring an effortless reading experience.

How did we fix a few of the client’s problems?

  • We used a Unicode typeface for the Greek passages of text, which also matched the weight of the main body text.
  • This text content featured many superscripts, which were checked along the way to make sure they were not too close to the text on the left.
  • We used consistent alignment, spacing and proportions throughout and a British designed typeface sympathetic to the time period and author of the book.

Book type

Input

Plain English rewriting/editing, series book cover design, educational book design, technical and freehand illustration, typesetting, design of practical activities (paper construction exercise and helpful calculator function card), and paper research and sourcing.

Feedback

GCSE student: ‘It [the design] gives it a second chance’. A teacher: ‘On the verge of brilliance’.

Details

2 column layout. Page size: A5: width 210mm × height 148.5mm. Pages: average 30. Paper: Think Warm, 100g/m², 50% recycled.

How did we fix a few of the client’s problems?

  • We used a highly appealing, modern and fresh typeface for these workbooks. The typeface had the required mathematical symbols.
  • We used a medium weight typeface so the text could be read from further away. A regular or light version of the typeface would have been harder to read, when a student may put down the workbook on a desk and start writing in an exercise book from further away.
  • Extra care was taken over alignment of all content and text.
